In my childhood there was a collective congregational gulp as the elderly churchwarden declaimed "Mary exposed to a man whose name was Joseph"

He also used to leave such a huge reverential gap in "Mary, Joseph and the Babe.... lying in the manger" that he'd land all three of them in it.
