Am never going to get caught up with the flist. Leave me a comment if you've written/ seen anything you think would interest me, OK?

Also, have a snippet of Leonard Cohen lyrics I've got stuck in my head just now:

It's written in the scriptures
It's written there in blood
I even heard the angels declare it from above
There ain't no cure,
There ain't no cure,
There ain't no cure for love

I like that rather a lot.

ETA: I hate copy-editing, especially my own translations. I have the feeling that I no longer have any sprachgefühl speech feeling sense of English usage (see what I mean?), at least for academic prose, which unfortunately is what I'm trying to produce. Also, I have somehow managed to turn the language setting in Word off, permanently, for the document I'm reviewing. This is annoying, especially as when I want to turn it off for blocks of Middle High German or Latin, it won't stay off and keeps autocorrecting my endings into gibberish....

I don't know that Cohen song, but I think I would like it.

Commiserations on the dubious behaviour of Word...

Welcome back! I rather like those lyrics.

I've come to hate Word lately, especially the spelling and grammar checking option. Somehow it always switches itself back on when I have switched it off manually before. Also, Microsoft's idea of German grammar is simply appalling!

Microsoft's idea of English is bad enough (eg the way it always corrects the verb "yeld" into "yield", which nobody east of Seattle ever heard of). But if you really want to have the screaming blue nightmares, you should try their Italian.

Oh, don't tempt me!

Seriously though, since I'm going there in September, why Seattle?

Because that is the city Microsoft honour by their presence, of course.

*headdesk* Of course. That was pretty stupid even for my standards. I blame the lack of coffee, which incidentally was the only thing I remembered Seattle for.

We all have days like that.. especially if we have been fighting against some of the more egregious features in Windows...

hey, I'm on the eastern side of the Atlantic from Seattle, and I've never even heard of 'yeld'.

I looked it up (Encarta, OED, Oxford English Etymological Dictionary) and you are right. It seems I have spelled a common English verb wrong for a quarter of a century, and nobody told me.

I have heard enough horror stories about recent versions of Word to last me a lifetime. I am glad that most of my documents are still cast in the 97 form.
