I'd love to, but I'm not entirely sure myself, although I vaguely seem to remember the term coming up in a discussion of late mediaeval religion and indulgences. I think it's a sort of talisman that gets you out of Purgatory... but I may be entirely wrong.

Apparently I'm not as Catholic as Google seems to think.

Oh, it's not my line of country at all, and smakc of an unpleasant combination of exploiting the fightened and ignorant, and of magic in the negative sense.

I had no idea that that sort of thing still existed, though - I'm amazed it survived the (Counter)-Reformation.
