Peter Grant fans may be pleased to discover this list of acronyms in use by the Met. I am gratified to discover that HOLMES is real, and that the real Met is as besotted with unhelpful acronyms as the fictional one.

There's even a meta-acronym - TLA (Three Letter Acronyms)

Hence the (possibly apocryphal) naval memo 'All TLAs should consist of four letters'

I once wrote a spoof 'presentation' for a work conference that consisted (with me delivering it in my best Spock impersonation) of as many TLAs as I could fit in and still make some sort of sense. Luckily, the job actually involved quite a lot of them...
