Why, oh why can't I find any clips from House of Cards on You Tube, leaving me unable to demonstrate to an American friend why the moment in the Hogfather film where Death says 'You might think that, but I couldn't possibly comment' is, while admittedly gratuitous and borderline OOC, screamingly funny?

It was really good fun - it's an excellent adaptation (well, I had the odd niggle, but nothing major), and conveys an impressive amount of the underlying philosophy of the book. Much better than I expected, actually.

It's definitely worth seeing. There's the odd moment in the first half which would have benefitted from editing, but it's one of the best adaptations I've seen in ages.

Shame Death's plastic mask is so plasticy, though.

Can you buy House of Cards on DVD? I missed it first time round, and the more people talk about it, the more I think it's the sort of thing I'd love!

Yes, although it's quite dear. It is absolutely brilliant, though, especially the first two series (was never that convinced by the third one, though it's worth watching, and is redeemed to an extent by the pay off)

But definitely a must see.

I'm astonished there's nothing on youtube, but there you go. But I can only say that I think HoC is definitely worth watching - appallingly cynical, of course, but brilliantly written and acted (don't bother with the books, though).

Ye-es. On the other hand, it was just the one moment, and otherwise the characters are totally different (hence the borderline OOC-ness). Death is an innocent: he doesn't entirely understand humanity, and he's very aware of both its faults and its virtues, and underneath all the rather comedic fascination with the minutiae of human life, he's characterised by a sort of passionless charity. You couldn't get more different from Urquhart.

A little off-topic, but: anyone remember Richardson in Porterhouse Blue? That's my real fave (although HoC was wonderful of course). I still find myself singing the theme music for PB sometimes.

I finally watched a borrowed DVD or PB in the Autumn - Richardson was terrific, although the desire to throw heavy objects at the rest of the characters did get in teh way of complete enjoyment of the programme.

I don't know - it's _so_ extreme, you may find yourself looking at your own place with a more indulgent eye? (I was most amused by the 'aristocratic' fancy-dress party - Prince Harry would have fit right in).
