Sigh. I wandered into Borders looking for Eamon Duffy's "The Stripping of the Altars", and wandered out minus said fascinating study of the late-Mediaeval/ early Reformation English church, but plus 'Cetaganda' - yes. more Vorkosigan.

The cover - it's an American edition - is seriously horrible, though. It looks like it's eligible for some sort of bad cover art prize (possibly, since it has a proud endorsement from the 'Romantic Times', the 'bad romance cover art' [livejournal.com profile] snorkackcatcher linked to the other day).

There's also something mildly annoying about buying a book for the same price in pounds as is given in dollars on the jacket, though that's hardly the American publisher's fault.

I found (and still do find) "Cetaganda" very enjoyable.

I was boggled by a Grauniad Notes and Queries this week asking why American books were always so much nicer than British ones. Clearly the people involved didn't read science fiction!

Re-reading “A Civil Campaign” at the moment, and thinking that the cover artist has an idea what the book is about, but has not picked up on the most striking physical characteristic of the male lead… Whereas the new British Bujold editions have boring but at least non-embarrassing generic spaceship covers.

Ooooooo, Duffy. Am reading it for the second time, atm, because of my Music in Tudor England seminar. I know, fantastic. :D

Oooo, I forgot to say, welcome to my world! I hated the fact that every book I bought in the UK was the same number in pounds as in dollars, but not in worth to me. I hate that I bought Tudor Church Militant for 6 pounds in the UK when I could have had it for 6 -- half the price -- in the USA (but with a slightly less-romantic title).
