Yes, what I've seen of American printing/ binding (not just the art, but also the paper quality) makes you realise why they talk about pulp fiction.
The American HP bindings are much flashier than the Bloomsbury ones, but I'm not sure if they are better in terms of physical quality. Mind you, the British HP is quite bad, considering how much money they make (though the cover art is fine). The only American Discworld edition I ever saw was rather nasty.
