Well, that was different. I've never had chopsticks at formal hall before. Given the incompetence with which I use them and the cost of dry-cleaning a gown, it's probably just as well that this doesn't often happen.

Heh! Don't worry about any chopstick-related incompetence.

I spent two weeks with [livejournal.com profile] ayumie in Japan where I could only use chopsticks for the whole time, and at the end of my holidays, it was still a daily struggle with the damned things. The Japanese were most amused by me, though.

What did they serve at formal hall, though?

Chopsticks in an Oxford formal hall? Now I've really seen everything.

I wonder if there'll be letters to the Times about this?

Seriously, though, that's fairly normal. In the course of my first two years in China I ruined more good shirts than I like to count by spilling violently coloured chilli concoctions down my front. Great food, but in some ways my wardrobe has never fully recovered!

Maybe it was a ... um, a link to Guy Fawkes Night, as the Chinese invented gunpowder and all?

Okay, not very likely, admittedly.

I take it they don't give you backup cutlery if you ask for it?

Sounds like formal dinners are some kind of trial by ordeal.

Hope the food was worth it.

Try "White Wizard" from Lakeland (not a shop I usually recommend, due to their selling moth repellent guaranteed not to have been tested on animals). I think it's basically white paraffin, and you do have to scrub a bit, but it's got red wine out of white aertex for me, and grubby marks out of silk collars.
