How very true; I'd not recognise it if I met it in my soup, to be honest, and I'm not even 40 yet.
Surely it's not part of their foster training; Caroline sniffs at a heap of powder, has a little taste and says 'Yes, typical low-grade UK coke, mostly speed in fact, with an aftertaste of Vim.'
Did Caroline have a dodgy youth, enabling her to guess at what it wasn't? (small brown lumps, in my imagination)
I suppose she might have read something about it in the Sunday papers? I thought it was fairly obvious Ed was on something other than drink and dope, not that I would have been able to correctly identify the narcotic of choice from behaviour. I seem to vaguely remember that crack is white, but that isn't much help.
You do, however, need more paraphenalia to take crack than most drugs, IIRC - maybe she found something like that as well and put twoand two together?
I attended a wedding over the weekend where I discovered that I knew more about drugs than anyone else present (including a number of doctors) - entirely due to the drugs under discussion being crack and ketamine. I did eventially admit that it was because Ed took crack and Jazzer dabbled in the special-k, which lowered my street cred noticably.
