I'm quite lucky; I only get to hear the Archers once a fortnight or so, but endured Emma round warbling to Ed the other day. He seemed quite on the ball about her not wanting to move back into the caravan etc. but then hit the booze and drove Oliver at the end of his tether - dare I ask where he is now? Is he suicidal? (or is that the cause of your despair?)
(On a side note, I've been looking for someone to ask about this - do you really think Sam fancies Ruth or would be willing or able to do anything about it? It just sounds like a bad case of insecurity on Kirsty's part - I'm not wrong, am I?)
Ed has been abusing worse than alcohol, it seems: in fact, he's on crack, and has now been confronted about it by Oliver (who handled it surprisingly well, I think). Of course, the episode finished there, so no word on what will happen. Ed is an idiot, but I feel desperately sorry for him, despite the stupid things he's done.
Sam and Ruth have certainly had some somewhat flirtatious conversations, but I don't think there's been anything serious - that is, I think it was banter more than anything else. I don't think Ruth would really have an affair, she and David seem very fond of each other despite everything (and she'd arguably never do anything that would risk parting her from the Brookfield herd). Hope not, anyway - I'm getting sick of the adultery storylines! Kirsty, of course, hasn't had all that much luck with men, and she did start going out with Sam when he was at least theoretically in a relationship (didn't she? Or have I got that wrong?), so I can see her being a bit paranoid on such matters.
Hope you don't mind me butting in here but I was drawn to a discussion of the Archers, representation of accents and Wimsey irresistibly, like a dove drawn to its mate, don't ya know.
I was quite impressed that Caroline immediately recognised crack when finding it under Ed's mattress - I'd certainly have to spend a bit of time with Google images before I felt confident of correctly identifying a range of illicit substances, or perhaps this was part of their fostering training?
How very true; I'd not recognise it if I met it in my soup, to be honest, and I'm not even 40 yet.
Surely it's not part of their foster training; Caroline sniffs at a heap of powder, has a little taste and says 'Yes, typical low-grade UK coke, mostly speed in fact, with an aftertaste of Vim.'
Did Caroline have a dodgy youth, enabling her to guess at what it wasn't? (small brown lumps, in my imagination)
I suppose she might have read something about it in the Sunday papers? I thought it was fairly obvious Ed was on something other than drink and dope, not that I would have been able to correctly identify the narcotic of choice from behaviour. I seem to vaguely remember that crack is white, but that isn't much help.
You do, however, need more paraphenalia to take crack than most drugs, IIRC - maybe she found something like that as well and put twoand two together?
I'm not sure how much time elapsed between her finding the stuff and Oliver coming in again, so perhaps she was frantically googling "dubious illicit substances", so as to make sure of what it was (since I could believe her seeing it and instantly recognising it as Bad Stuff).
I attended a wedding over the weekend where I discovered that I knew more about drugs than anyone else present (including a number of doctors) - entirely due to the drugs under discussion being crack and ketamine. I did eventially admit that it was because Ed took crack and Jazzer dabbled in the special-k, which lowered my street cred noticably.
