For now, I'd like to pick the flist's collective brains about computer hardware. I'd like to buy an external harddrive, as my photo collection is getting out of hand (I run Mac OS 10.3 on an iBook G4). Anyone have any reccommendations?

I'd also really like to know what the hell I did with my USB stick after I last backed up my work... but I suspect I'm on my own resources, there!

Turn out your pockets. Turn out your bags. Check the cracks between sofa cushions. Is it still in the orignal machine? Did you use it at the university and someone handed it in to Lost Property?

When you've exhausted all the possibilities and are reduced to a state of utter, impotent frustration, collapse into a chair. You'll be sitting on it.

Hello. External hard drives are great! I just got one a couple of months ago... Sadly, I can't really give any recommendations though, as I got my more technically able boyfriend to pick mine for me... And it's a Seagate 500GB.

I mean, I can say that it does seem to work fine, but I have nothing else to compare it to. Only think maybe is that it takes some time for my laptop to notice it when first connected - but I guess that's probably due to processor speed. Btw I have the same computer as you :)

But I haven't really had or used it enough, to say that any problems won't come out later...

Oh, one more thing. There are different types of computer connection. Mine has a SATA one, for which I have an adapter to USB. But no idea whether that came with the hard drive, or whether my boyfriend sorted that out for me along with everything else...

I sound like such a girl. Sorry.

Yes, I think that price was quite a decisive factor for me. But range and comparative prices here and in the UK probably differ.

Yes, my experience has been good so far. But as I said, I just haven't really used it enough so far to tell if that will continue. Anyway, I'm not really sure what distinguishes one metal box from another :)

But at least I can say that I do heartily recommend the external hard drive thing in general.
