As Ithers See Us
Dalziel and Pascoe/ Life on Mars crossover.
Double drabble, gen. Mid-Yorks’ finest suspect they’re looking for a man from Manchester…
Not mine, no money being made, etc, etc. Dalzielesque use of colourful metaphors follow.



“Right” said Dalziel decisively. “Pete, get over to Manchester and take a good hard look at our lad. Talk to the parole officer, and you might as well have a word with them useless bloody wankers at Social Services and all.”

“And check in with the locals first, I suppose. A Division’s area, isn’t it?”

“Aye, right enough.” Suddenly the Fat Man laughed. “Hey, that’s Gene Hunt’s mob, isn’t it? That’ll be a treat for you.”

“What’s wrong with him? Incompetent? Bent? Freemason? Mad as a barrel of eels?”

“Nay, he’s not a bad lad for a Manchester City supporter, only –” Dalziel paused theatrically.

“What?”

“Well, you know all them nasty things Ellie used to say about me?”

“I recall the general drift, yes.”

“In Gene Hunt’s case, I think they might be true.”

Christ! thought Peter. Someone Dalziel thought was a fascistic, misogynistic, Palaeolithic, smug, arrogant bastard? Hard to imagine.

“Don’t misunderstand me, Pete. He’s a good cop, he’s just a bit more… uncomplicated than us civilised folks in Mid Yorks.”

Peter wondered if it was cowardly to make Wieldy go instead.

Dalziel scratched his crotch thoughtfully. “Wouldn’t clean spoons with that stuff he reckons is whisky, but.”

That's great! I can only admire the Dalziel/Pascoe part of this because I have never seen Life on Mars, but you've got their voices perfectly.

I'm rather regretting the fact that I watched the first episode of the first series of Life on Mars, and thought "Nah". D/P, though, are fab (albeit I haven't read the books).

I'd've sent Wieldy, too.

Life on Mars was an excellent show (70s cops with a time travel twist), but I was struck by the fact that DCI Hunt made Fat Andy look like a promising candidate for Mr Progressive Policeman 1975.... without actually being evil.

I think the books are a lot better than the adaptations (even though Warren Clarke in particular is fantastic in them); in particular, I resent what they did to Ellie Pascoe (which, in turn, means there's an increasing divergence between book! and TV! Peter)

I got into LoM late in the day - I saw the first episode the other night and am not sure if it would have pulled me in; but then I was too busy making connections with the final episode - despite the ambiguity of the ending, they did tie it into the beginning in a way that made emotional sense.

Yes, I've been hearing good things about it from all my British flist - not sure if it's available in Canada, and I'm not on any fancy cable service. Will look for the dvd.

Agree completely about Warren Clarke - great casting. Less so about the poor Pascoes - in particular, Ellie, from what little I've seen of the series, bears no relation WHATEVER to the real thing. One of the reasons I never made great efforts to watch the series, in fact.

TV!Ellie (who was completely miscast) had an affair, got a divorce, and flounced off to the States with Rosie. That was the point I really did give up - some things even Warren Clarke can't rescue.

Colin Buchannan was unecessarily thuggish as Peter, too, IIRC.

I'm glad you enjoyed it, as one of the D&P fans on my flist. It was just one of those things that popped into my mind and demanded to be written (and I wouldn't dare muck Fat Andy about...._

One of my first thoughts on seeing Gene Hunt was "Bloody Hell, he makes Andy Dalziel look like the face of progressive policing..."
