I learned today that this is the old vernacular name for the last Monday before Lent, and the day was viewed as one especially suitable for eating large pieces of fried meat.

Date: 2007-02-19 05:08 pm (UTC)I'm all stuck into the Chinese calendar at the moment, as Chinese New Year is the official time of the year when everyone stuffs their faces shamelessly with the most delicious food... though now I come to think of it, the New Year holiday ends just in time for Shrove Tuesday, so one could in theory get both in.
