The Unsuggestion for "Shards of Honour" appears to be "The Purpose-Driven Life" (which I am assured is more or less 'Seven habits of highly effective chicken soup' - that's a real title, right?- for evangelical Christians).

More interesting, perhaps, was the prevalance of Stephen King, as well as the inevitable chick-lit. Though after all, 'Shards of Honour' is a romance...

Well, I will admit I've only read the first book in the series, but I've heard very good things about the Dark Tower (Stephen King) overall. Have you read George R.R. Martin at all? I'm a great fan of his A Song of Ice and Fire series. Less on the romance but loads of brilliant characters and a thoroughly unpredictable plot.

It is dark, and some parts of it very much so. Though I have the feeling I might be bringing my copies back with me after Christmas; it's been awhile since I've reread them.

To be fair, "The Purpose-Driven Life" is quite good as evangelical books go. I would recommend it to my American Christian friends. It highlights charity, looking both outward and inward, and loving not judging. It's overall theme is the ministry of mercy. Sort of a feel-good Calvinist (predestination, specifically) theology intermixed with Mother Teresa Catholicism (although it certainly doesn't promote Catholicism). It is very American, however--aimed at the suburban church-a-holic.

Haven't read "Shards of Honour".
