Very sad to hear that Reginald Hill has died. Although I didn't talk about them much here, I absolutely loved Dalziel and Pascoe and the rest of the Mid-Yorks crew. Such good detective stories - gripping, well-written, with utterly believable characters, and the ability to explore very dark things without losing a sense of humour - which is, after all, one of the ways of coping with the darkness.

I hadn't heard that and I am sad too. I loved all his books, not just Dalziel and Pascoe. So witty and such good characterisation.

Yes, I thought of you when I saw the obit in the Guardian. I believe he'd more or less finished one more book, but it's still very sad news.

My thoughts also. It's not that long ago that I caught up with the Dalziel & Pascoe series, and I did wonder if it was time to start thinking there wouldn't be any more, and how sad that would be. Well, now it's time, and I'm thinking of re-reading some of the earlier books in the series that I haven't read in a while, just to remind myself of how much I like variuos members of the Mid-Yorks crew, and how wide-ranging the books are with respect to social issues, crimes, and playing with styles and texts

Hi, tree and leaf. Thanks for letting me read your journal. I'm sorry to hear it, too. My mother and I have loved Dalziel and Pascoe for so many years. Anytime Reginald Hill released a new book, whoever had the next birthday knew what they would score.
