Nov. 20th, 2006 04:08 pmDoes anyone out there happen to have access to the new German translation of 'Lord of the Rings'? (That is, not the Carroux version, but the new one where Sam calls Frodo 'Chef'? I would be eternally grateful to anyone who could provide me with a copy of the beginning of Ch12 of the Fellowship, down to "I am not a Black Rider, Sam,” he said gently, “nor am I in league with them. I am trying to discover something of their movements; but I have found nothing.”
I'm teaching a class on translation, and it would be interesting to be able to contrast two translations which take a very different approach to the text...

Date: 2006-11-20 04:19 pm (UTC)Btw, speaking of German - I'm a complete beginner looking to learn German well enough to read academic texts (help!). Can you suggest any textbook(s) useful for learning German (esp.grammar) 'properly'? All the stuff I've been able to find focuses on learning to pick someone up in a German bar after only learning for 3 days.
I'd like to learn the basics before going to any classes, because beginner language classes will drive me INSANE

Date: 2006-11-20 04:49 pm (UTC)Oddly enough, Bodley has about six copies of the Carroux, of various ages, but no Krege (some would say this was evidence of good taste, of course) There are some dodgy copies of LOTR translations on the internet, but the ones I've found thus far are also all Carroux.
