A vid to the BBC Radio Play (best adaptation of LotR ever), with the estimable Bill Nighy as Sam, singing "Gil-Galad was an Evlven King" (back in the days when he was still known as William Nighy!)

And, for the purposes of comparison, Tolkien himself reading it. He doesn't read terribly well, but he has a pleasant voice, and rolls his rs beautifully...

And him reading "We must away, ere break of day" (I had heard the theory that Mordor should really pronounced 'Morrdorr' - but Tolkien doesn't seem to consciously pronounce it differently from any phonologically similar words. He seems to just naturally have a slight burr).

I love the Bill Nighy version - that IS the best Tolkien adaptation evah (I listened to it on the CBC back in 1980 when it first came out, and the theme music still gives me chills). Interesting to hear Tolkien doing the "Morrrrdor" that the Peter Jackson picked up.

That is one of the most memorable melodies in the BBC radio play! And Tolkien's voice in definitely worth hearing.
