A somewhat ambivalent song. Is it an ironic comment on man's inhumanity to man and the futility of our attempts to find comfort, or is it about the presence of hope even in the most awful situations?
I don't know how it was intended, but for me it's the latter, and I think any Christian who takes the Incarnation seriously will read it that way, despite the fact that S & G are not Christians. Yes, that's the world the story tells us God was born into, but... it's the world we believe God was born into.
