That's an issue of college usage, though, whereas 'second dessert' is just plain illogical....

I always thought it made a lot of sense personally, as there was normally a dessert of some kind at the main dinner.

Definitely not in America, though, and he's American. Actually, that has always been one of the linguistic differences I've always found the most strange. Pudding is one very specific type of delicious smooth sweet thing, and it's confusing to see it mean a generic dessert!

Oh, I don't blame Jorg Cham for getting it wrong - anyway, it's clearly what someone has told him. It's just I hear '2nd desserts' a lot in Oxford, and it always slightly annoys me.

Interesting what you say about pudding in America - that's like German use, but quite different from British.

Last Wednesday. I actually mentioned that I'd been on here, but it was right after the election and the drama, so it probably got overlooked. I only knew he was coming because I saw the invite on Facebook - I wish I'd known you'd have been interested, because then I'd have mentioned it (and perhaps there would have been another Arts student than me present!)

Actually, now that I think about it, I do remember you mentioning it but for some reason I hadn't connected the two. I think my brain isn't working properly right now. ;)

But, yes, I wish I could have gone, although I usually have Evensong on Wednesdays. Ah, well! I expect it was lots of fun, despite the lack of Arts students!

It was good fun - though I'm impressed by the way that the physicists managed to get away with claiming that it was a funding council training event (and got funding for it...)
