The book meme inspires me to ask two related questions: what do you think makes a good opening sentence? And what are your favourites?

I shall post some of my favourites later - but I'll let you have first crack of the whip.

I can tell you one thing after doing two first-line memes in the course of a week - it's a lot easier to find noteable first lines in published fiction than fanfiction.

I'm going to pay more attention to my own first lines in future: a really stunning number of very quirky and exciting fanfic begins with lines like "He was so bored" (plus going on to state that he was very bored).

So I've learned a lesson here - it's not just pointless entertainment, oh no...
