There are times - and this is one of them - where a strict vow of apostolic poverty seems not just morally excellent, but extremely attractive, not to say the only convincing model of existence.

... only I know I'd miss the books and pictures really. I could do without the wildly varying styles of dress just now, though, including the evening dress which exposure to St Andrews and Oxford made me pack as a necessity, and hasn't been off the hanger once.

Eeeh, packing up and moving is never fun. Have a safe and stress-free (well, as much as possible, anyway) trip back home!

You will not be surprised to know that I have no evening dresses, and it's a long time since I have fitted into my student-era dinner jacket, I confess.

I do empathise with the wish for apostolic poverty somewhat, though it's based on what I suspect is a variant of the sin of covetousness. I am very reluctant to throw out any of the magazines and newspapers I accumulated in the 1980s and 1990s, even though I think I rarely look at them.

Ah, there are days when going old-order Mennonite would be sweet, but I know I would miss the music too much.

Clothes: wonderful and torturous at the same time.

Heh. Yeah, I brought a DJ along for similar reasons, and with similar results.

And yes, there are times when a monk-like existence seems preferable. With me, it's more when I have too many things going on

This may defeat the purpose, but a vote of Apostolic poverty definitely does not exclude a large library. It certainly did not hold back St.Jerome in his Jerusalem hermitage, or St. Thomas as a Dominican begging friar, from having access to every possible and conceivable book of their times.

I was not being serious either.
