Even I could get into the idea of Brideshead slash, and it takes a pairing that's very close to reality to do that for me.

Actually, it's that he didn't fancy any of the Flytes or their friends, but was gathering material in order to write a Devestating Novel/Memoir to support his middle age. That's why he didn't try to stop Sebastian's drinking - he wouldn't have minded the odd bit of champagne and groping under the beech trees, but the man was so insistent, and in that sense Chalres thought that the much-reported effects of alcohol could only be a good thing personally, as well as good copy.
