Also, I have been persuaded to join an RPG (pen and paper) group - the game in question being Midgard, which is a German language game, and low-fantasy, and I have been spending too much time today thinking about my character, who is a pseudo-Scottish wandering monk (and not-entirely-ex-smuggler), who theoretically has a high level of magical ability, but who in practice is more likely to hit bandits or the like over the head with the nearest blunt object, because thus far the only spells he knows are healing ones.

Don't worry, I shall try to avoid regaling you with endless tales of What I Am Doing In My Adventure, because that strikes me as as dubious as telling people about dreams, but it was quite amusing that when I complained about a sore shoulder at lunch this morning (a result of lugging books about), one of my fellow players grinned and said 'that'll be the cudgel blow, then?'

Pen and Paper RPGs are major fun. :)
I played DSA (Das Schwarze Auge) for years, it just abaded the last 6 months because of exams, and friends taking exams, and now my own exams. Have fun! :)

First year at University, sitting in the dining hall for breakfast. Five of us excitedly discussing the adventure of the previous night. It starts off fairly gently - the noise that made us jump in the woods, the argument at the crossing, the attack by screaming orks which we repelled by pouring lamp oil into the stream and setting fire to it... at which point a rather worried third year leaned across and asked if this was something that had really happened...

I don't really understand about these games and how they work and that, but... that sounds like the coolest character ever!

Well, you make a character by choosing a species, a country of origin, and character type/ job (priest, magician, knight errant, bandit, etc, etc). Other aspects are decided at least partly by rolling dice: handedness and class, for instance, are purely down to dice rolls, as are things like strength, speed, endurance, though the latter can get better as the character gets fitter by adventuring! You also roll the dice to get a certain number of points for education and training, which you can divide as you like to give your character certain skills. Theoretically you can also roll to decide how tall and heavy your character is, but as I'd already ended up with someone who could run fast but was slightly clumsy, I decided this fitted best with being tall and gangly... He's an ex-smuggler because I thought it was (a) amusing and (b) fitted quite well with coming from the coast, humble origins, and being the wandering priest of a sea god.

Yeah. I started playing in an RPG (LJ version) about 6 weeks ago, and it has eaten my life; all spare time is consumed thinking and plotting. I love it, and hope you enjoy yours!
