Well, you make a character by choosing a species, a country of origin, and character type/ job (priest, magician, knight errant, bandit, etc, etc). Other aspects are decided at least partly by rolling dice: handedness and class, for instance, are purely down to dice rolls, as are things like strength, speed, endurance, though the latter can get better as the character gets fitter by adventuring! You also roll the dice to get a certain number of points for education and training, which you can divide as you like to give your character certain skills. Theoretically you can also roll to decide how tall and heavy your character is, but as I'd already ended up with someone who could run fast but was slightly clumsy, I decided this fitted best with being tall and gangly... He's an ex-smuggler because I thought it was (a) amusing and (b) fitted quite well with coming from the coast, humble origins, and being the wandering priest of a sea god.
