Also, question mostly for the Germans/ Austrians on the flist.

For some time, I've found myself wanting a pair of Zimmermanshose - the traditional black cords, with pockets down the side legs suitable for sticking squares, pens, etc in, worn by German carpenters as wandering apprentices.

But: is it bad form/ tacky to have a pair when you aren't actually a carpenter? I have worked in wood, at school and hobbyishly, but I'm quite aware that's not at all the same thing...

I'm afraid I can't help you - the modern day wandernder Geselle is an exclusively German phenomenon. However, if it was a Dirndl you fancied...

I think I lack the required Oberweite....apart from not really being southern enough to pull it off!

The great thing about a good Dirndl is, no matter what your frame is, it'll always make you look curvier than you really are. I didn't believe it at first, because I don't have the big boobs either. But when I moved to Munich in September and had to go to Oktoberfest with my firm, I bought one. It actually looked great...

But back to your question: I'm pretty sure you don't have to prove in any way that you actually are a Zimmermann. But I think wuglet is right, it would probably be frowned upon.

Astonishing - but I think it's still a bit too Bavarian for me to feel at home in (nothing against the Freistaat, but it's definitely Abroad)

Yeah, well I wouldn't go out of the house wearing one anywhere else but here, either. And even here, I'd only wear it to Oktoberfest or Nockherberg. In Freiburg, they'd think you're a crazy foreigner, probably.

Ich habe gerade erfahren, dass ich nächstes Wochenende auch in Freiburg bin. Vielleicht reicht es dann für eine Wurst für mich. ;-)

As far as I know, you can only get those trousers at special shops for work-clothes. I don't know if you have to prove that you work a certain job to buy the clothes though.

And well, those trousers are outstanding. If you wear them for everyday use, you could get some weary reactions. As for the professionals, I think they wouldn't be too impressed if someone outside the craft wore the equipment.

I don't want to put you off, only offering some thoughts!

I go with this solution! Had the same problem YEARS ago with lederhosen for females.

Actually, I can think of a context where you can wear lederhosen as a female in Germany, but it's fairly specific... (i.e.,Scouts)

That's not a bad idea. I notice you can also get similar trousers in brown or green, which don't scream 'carpenter' quite so loudly...

If you're getting work clothes and want them to last- consider getting them from Kraehe. The other half bought several sets of green dungarees from them when he started his apprenticeship. After 15 years of pretty heavy usage they finally disintegrated. They are expensive, but that stuff LASTS!
