I've just finished watching the DS9 baseball episode, in which a (rather unpleasant) Vulcan challenges Sisko to a baseball game for no apparent reason, and the rest of the DS9 core cast for no apparent reason go along with it.

I know I'm fixating on the wrong thing - and that there's no way you can justify taking the episode seriously - but the thing that really stopped me being able to suspend my disbelief is that neither O'Brian nor Bashir made the 'rounders' crack, or argues out that any or all from a list of cricket, football, rugby, hurling, Gaelic Rules football, or, indeed, rounders was a superior game to baseball, and better for the character.

I also think it would have been infinitely more amusing if it had been cricket, although admittedly given war-time conditions they could hardly have played a full test.

I have to admit that I wouldn't mind trying Miles' whisky flavoured chewing gum, though.

I haven't actually seen that episode (or indeed almost any of the last series -- I had it on tape, having missed the first episode, and never got around to watching -- at some point I shall have to get a DVD player and go back over some of the stuff I've missed) but as I recall it was stated in an earlier episode that baseball had basically died out a couple of centuries before, in which case Bashir and O'Brien wouldn't have a clue what it was except as something Sisko had an odd fondness for?

I think the episode was If Wishes Were Horses back in Series 1 -- the holodeck version of a legendary great player (for a London team!) follows Jake out into the station, and Sisko talking to him mentions that in the last World Series in 22-something there had only been 300 people there. There was also an episode in which Sisko's girlfriend (the ship captain, whose name I can't remember, sad to say) mentions that some people including her brother(?) were trying to revive the sport on an amateur basis.

It would indeed have been fun if it had been cricket, though, although I suppose it wouldn't have made any sense to the primary target US audience. (Then again, the missed opportunity that really annoyed me was in Voyager where the crew ended up playing WW2 French Resistance characters on the holodeck after being captured by that hunter species -- and at no point once they realise what's going on does Chakotay or Torres or anyone else tease Janeway about finally having been part of the Maquis.)

I've had a similar episode in TNG recently - one of those We Must All [activity X] things - I've been racking my brains all afternoon to try and remember what, with no success!

But for what it's worth I had exactly the same reactions you seem to be having now.

And there is organised sport in Enterprise - Archer is often seen watching water polo (the link with his extensive and lovingly bound porn collection speaks for itself, I think). And wasn't there some sort of bat-and-ball game with aliens in a desert?
