TV Tropes now has a page for Rev.

This, of course, also includes a set of tropes for each character. They list the Archdeacon as straight gay: a homosexual character who has no camp mannerisms or obviously 'gay' affectations.

I'm not sure about this, given that it's fairly obvious from early on to viewers who know anything about the C of E that he's gay. And the sauna scene early on in S2 was also a bit of a give-away...

Hmm. I haven't studied TV Tropes enough to know, but it sounds like maybe anyone who isn't camping it up all over the screen and shrieking about accessories ends up categorized as "straight gay." Perhaps they need an "ordinary gay" category -- people like the Archdeacon who clearly read as gay if you pay any attention, but aren't actually scattering pink confetti across the screen ...

That said, I do find him a bit camp. But perhaps that's obscured by a larger expectation that priests will be that way?

I did read him as gay but wasn't entirely sure because I recall taking the Finn to a family reunion where he was convinced half my father's cousins were gay and I had to explain that you can't really tell because high camp is an occupational hazard of being bishop's chaplain at Wells Cathedral.

Hmm, perhaps the "occupational hazard" issue explains our local Archdeacon.
