Am I brave enough for this pattern? ETA: The alternative is Haruni, but I think that is too difficult, especially as I have no idea about provisional cast ons.

(Also, I need a knitting icon...

Random driveby from Network to say that Swallowtail is a great first shawl--it was mine and it worked quite well!

My housemate picked up her knitting needles recently, for the first time in years, and realised too late that she had forgotten how to cast off. If not for the internet, she would be knitting still.

Both shawls are started the same way, with a garter-stitch 'tab'. You can use a provisional cast-on for that, but any cast-on that gives you a reasonably neat chain effect along the edge will do just as well - you're only going to pick up 2 or 3 stitches along that edge. Neither shawl is particularly difficult - I think I've got both of them bookmarked (& have just dumped them into my 'library' on Ravelry so I could inspect them more closely!). You get 'nupps' in Swallowtail; Haruni is fairly repetitive for the main chart, but has a slightly fancier edging. If you *really* want a veryveryvery simple 'lace' shawl, I could suggest Damson instead? (It's what I started with! - see icon.)

My recommendation for a beginner's lace shawl is Forest Canopy - the pattern is written with beginners specifically in mind.

Haruni actually looks slightly simpler to me, as it doesn't have nupps, which can be a pain (I also find myself wondering where my Swallowtail is at the moment).

The start is the same for both - there are pictorial instructions for the provisional cast on method here: http://dampcityknits.wordpress.com/2009/08/02/garter-tab-cast-on/ but actually you can perfectly well cast on with any loose method, then pick up stitches from the bottom of the cast-on row.

I've done a couple of shawls with a crochet bind-off successfully, despite not really being able to crochet at all.
