Can anyone explain the reference to 'grape' in this post and icon? It's obviously something to do with shipping Hermione/ Snape, but I can't work out what.

ETA: *head-desk* OK, it was bloody obvious. Kids these days, with their smushed ship names, it wasn't like that in my day....

The best I can say for that portmanteau name is that it's marginally better than 'Herpe'.

I have to admit I have trouble taking any of the smushed ship names seriously! (Remember the days of Fiction Alley's weird ship names? Though the only one I can remember is "The Government Stole My Toad".)

I think I find the HMS Ship names slightly less nauseating than the merged ones. I found myself wondering while cleaning my teeth "why is it Spuffy, anyway, it sounds really stupid?" Then I realised that the alternative would be Bike.

The HMS names at least sometimes had the virtue of being vaguely funny and/ or creative.

I am relieved that merged names haven't caught on in Trek fandom, although this is probably because the biggest ship would give you a choice between "Spirk" (sounds like a character from a parody) and "Kock" (no comment) - and any merging of Kirk and McCoy, the other big slash ship, would be unpronouncable. Unless you went for McKirk, I suppose.* I think I saw "Spuhura" recently. I'm not sure what that sounds like, but I refuse to use it.

* They could resurrect the ship theme. USS Hypo-allergic's got a nice ring to it.

Bloody kids! 'Grape' is such a stupid ship portmanteau. I feel like that ship had another name back in the Fiction Alley days, but I can't remember what it was. Lightning in a bottle? Or maybe that was Harry/Snape, that seems more likely.

I don't remember at all. But I've just found the page that gives you them and discover that Hermione/ Draco was "SS Leather and Libaries." Ah, leatherpants! Draco, how I (haven't) missed you...

Harry/ Snape appears to have been RMS Illegal Substances, and Hermione/ Snape SS Prudence and Potions. But I don't remember either of those (I do remember Draco/ Ginny being HMS Fire and Ice, and who could forget the Harmonians...), so I wonder if some of the ships haven't been renamed?

I really dislike the smushed up ship names. For me it's a sign to avoid the fic.

And "grape" is just the silliest smushed up name ever.
