This afternoon I have read the phrase "the problem of John" (I am reading for the course on the theology of John) so often that I'm beginning to think it ought to be a genre of Biblical fan-fic.

"The problem of John" has been tackled for centuries by Biblical fanfic, only they don't call it that. What immediately comes to mind is Jacobus de Voragine's claim in the Golden Legend (and I know it didn't originate there) that the bride and groom at the Cana wedding were actually Mary Magdalen and John the Apostle, and when he took off to follow Jesus instead, she became a prostitute (as you do), and then... uh, see, back to the Synoptics! And all the non-Virgin Marys are really one Mary! Whew! It's a really excellent fix-it fic.
