Several months late, but I just found this, and I don't think there's any excuse for me not commenting given that I've been shivering and shrieking at regular intervals.
It's horrible on so many levels, as other people have pointed out. It's not just the bits and pieces of plot and characterization... the whole picture and the world view that comes with it is so dark. All gloom and no hope, not because there isn't any but because they've given up.
