IMHO, the characterization does work here because you manage to tie up Peter's feelings for Harriet, his "guilty" conscience when it comes to his inability to save her life and his war trauma.

It's not the cliché of "he would have needed only the love of a good woman" (which I find quite horrible, to be honest), but it's just the way in which everything comes together which fits.
