Yes, that's about the size of it with Kant, I think (he's certainly critical of some of the things that happened in the early period, and with the exception of Our Hero's first boss, who is a bad lot, virtually all the characters who end up in the West (being miserable, of course) are sympathetic and their reasons for going were related to bad things which had happened to them in the DDR.

I'm definitely going to go and see if the book is in the King's library, anyway, it sounds pretty good.
Yay! I'd be surprised if it isn't - it used to be on quite a lot of undergraduate reading lists, and it was quite popular in West Germany, too (it's still in print).
