I think the requiem thing could well be an archaism - I seem to remember being told that we used to use black vestments for funerals, but you're right that these days it's pretty much all white. I think it's a general shift in focus, you know?

Wiki has a whole bunch of stuff about liturgical colours which seems to back that up. Black's optional for funerals and All Souls, but in the modern RC rite white is the norm.
