We don't use the A-word (or, as the case may be, the H-word) during Lent or Advent, including the Sundays, because they are penitential seasons, and singing A******* is too much fun (no, seriously). Strictly speaking, you aren't supposed to use it in the liturgy - most obviously, not singing/ saying 'Alleluia, alleluia' at the little exchange between deacon and people before the Gospel reading at mass (the 'acclamation'), but saying or singing 'Praise to Thee, O Christ, King of eternal glory' instead. But it appeals to the sense of humour of high church lunatics like me to avoid the word altogether (a friend of mine's Facebook status was lamenting the appearance of the A-word on 'Early Music' on Sunday...)

An Anglo-Catholic (despite his insistence that he's really broad church) cleric of my acquaintance confessed to having been a Goth as a teenager. I am torn between not being able to quite imagine it and feeling that it makes a strange sort of sense....

He is sort of an odd duck, isn't he? Not my favourite Pope, although we could've done worse, I reckon. I suppose I've only lived through two of them so I've not much to compare with--I find it odd how it seems as if so many of my friends either adore him or hate him, but I suppose it's mostly cos I seem to be very much always the one in the centre. He seems like a deep thinker who forgets to think about too many important things on the daily-business level, if that makes any sense.

I kind of wish the conclave had elected somebody else, also, although he has been, so far, not as bad as I feared he might could be.

I don't know the cardinals well enough to say who might have been a better choice. I met an African cardinal as a very small child who stands vividly in my memory as one of the most holy individuals I've ever encountered (judgment made on nothing more than sheer feeling) but I have no idea what his name was, let alone whether he survived John Paul II.
