Kosher salt is the type of salt used for koshering the meat (drawing the blood out of it).

Salt itself is pareve, if officially approved as kosher by the Usual Authorities. If not approved by said authorities, it's up to the individual's conscience.

Ah - thank you. Ther term kept coming up on food blogs, and confusing me. Someone told me yesterday that in Britain it's usually called 'koshering salt', which is probably a logical term, but you see kosher products much less frequently here than in the States....

That can depend a bit on where you live. Safeway at Stamford Hill had lots when I lived there (probably still does since its in the middle of a hugely orthodox Jewish area)
