There was a documentary made in the early 1990s about Angel station, shortly before it closed for rebuilding, when it still had a single central platform and two tracks (a bit like the Glasgow clockwork orange); and London Underground were still employing the old female fluffers then, with jobs in some cases having been handed down from mother to daughter. How the PPP has wrecked tradition...

Yes it is, although it's for a pleasant reason; a good friend of mine is arriving for a visit form Germany that evening, and she probably won't get into the centre of Oxford till seven or half past sevenish. I've been trying to work out if it's realistic and/ or kind to take her along (she's a Tolkien fan and enjoys rpg, so although she's not involved in lj fandom, I think she'd enjoy it - but she'll probably be tired). :(

I initially thought she was arriving in the early afternoon, which would have been fine, but she had to get a later flight.

Well, if you click on the link at 0820, it will explain in more detail - but fluffers are what they call the cleaners who remove the dust, hair, litter and, er, fluff from the rails after the Tube shuts down for the night. Minimises fire hazards, it seems. (Which I believe, given what happened with the escalators at Kings Cross).
