Are you trying to remember the word Jura? That's what sprang to mind, but on reflection I'm not at all sure that's what you're talking about.
[Especially being no Germanicist, and a Germanist only by violent stretching of the definition.]

Nah, it's the difference between Germanisten and Romanisten in history of law (specifically the difference between students of the Codex Justinian and those trying to reconstruct Germanic tribal law.
