Quote from LotR when you read this

"It is not our part to master all the tides of the world, but to do what is in us for the succour of those years wherein we are set, uprooting the evil in the fields we know, so that those who live after may have clean earth to till. What weather they shall have is not ours to rule."

Gandalf, at the Council of Elrond.

And, of course:

All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.

A verse which I find almost embarassingly moving, but in an encouraging sort of way.

On a related subject: I have just realised that I am coming back from the conference a day earlier than I thought (boo). I know booking has closed for Oxenmoot, but does anyone know if it possible to go as a 'day vistor' to some or all of it?

Can you tell a non-member how to register? I was just thinking yesterday evening that my continued non-involvement with things Tolkien is really something that I should get over, given that it stems really from that 12 year old thinking that people might be 'a bit weird' (although the woman on breakwast TV dressed up as Elwing didn't help that!).

Mmm. Go to the porters lodge at Christ Church, any time from Thursday evening on, and ask them where to go for the Tolkien Society's Oxonmoot. Then go there, check that you've got registration, and pay.

You might be able to join the TS at the same time, thus getting the members' rate.

It would be great to meet you!

ETA: Which woman?

Thanks! I think that I shall book myself in for the Saturday and dip my toe in the water. I'll be the slightly baffled looking woman with the dark curly hair.

Alas, I can't tell you who was Elwing, because she was in a giant swan costume.
