Glad you thought it did make sense, as I wasn't sure if I was reading too much into it for reasons of personal obsession ;) but the aggressive reaction of her mother ("That won't help you", or words to that effect) seemed deliberately pointed.

Actually, I think I've read that, but I hadn't realised it was quite so pervasive in the fandom. It doesn't seem a necessary consequence of canon.
