I've yet to find any really good, meaty fanfic (though I've read some excellent ficlets and drabbles).

*gasp*
Indeed? How could that be? Really, there are some very excellent gems out there. Care for a few recs?

Now, I can but try and hope that not all of these are already familiar to you.. I shall hope not. :) It has been some time since my last venture to Tolkien fanfic, so I'm likely missing the newest ones.

Firstly, Thundera Tiger, a great LotR gen-fiction author. Wonderful balance between adventure plot, drama, humour and introspection. Fluent writing, well researched details, as well as very excellent characterization. I would virtually rec any of her stories, but if you've never ran into her writing 'While the Ring Went South' (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/439625/1/While_the_Ring_went_south) is a good place to start. A quite convincing 'missing scenes' story of certain part of the Fellowship's journey not actually described in the book in detail.
http://www.fanfiction.net/u/12399/

More gen-fic, author: Marnie. Especially insightful characterization of Celeborn, but very fluent characterization with others as well.
'Those Who Remain' (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1233093/1/Those_Who_Remain) where the authtor's summary is: 'What can Sam Gamgee, and Lord Celeborn of Lorien possibly have in common?'. A story that offers a little glimpse into the sorrow of both.
'Battle of the Golden Wood
'
(http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1261309/1/The_Battle_of_the_Golden_Wood) is a multi-chapter story about what went on it Lorien as the War of the Ring reached its borders.
'Just In Case' (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2162247/1/Just_In_Case), the summary of which is:
'Galadriel's temptation by the One Ring is well known, but what about Celeborn? What was he doing, while this perilous thing stayed in his realm?'

Zimraphel's story 'Not For Pride Alone' (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1640673/1/Not_For_Pride_Alone) is listed under Silmarillion, but it features mainly Glorfindel (and a few brave errant Hobbits) taking part in a stand against the Witch-King. Wonderful take on Glorfindel's characterization: the (allegedly) resurrected, humble but powerful Noldorin elf Lord making that fated prophesy. The same author also has other quite wonderful stories that focus of Glorfindel and his return to Middle-Earth.

'Sting' (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1233315/1/Sting) by TreeHugger. 'Bilbo learns of the origins of his little sword from Glorfindel.'

'Bargaining for Beginners' (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/663730/1/Bargaining_for_Beginners) by Honesty does have some insignificantly mild 'shipping', but it is still a wonderful take on the first meeting of two craftsmen during the time when there was existing trade relations between the elves of Ost-in-Edhil and dwarves of Moria in the Second Age. Its main characters are the makers of the West Gate of Moria mentioned in FotR: young Narvi and Celebrimbor, grandson of Feanor as their friendship begins to form. Legolas and Gimli were indeed not the first to have a deep friendship between their races. It's pretty lovely, I think.

You're quite welcome. It was nice actually to look through these dusty old links, I haven't been able to really focus on Middle-Earth for quite some time. Way too long in fact, considering how significant that whole thing is for me. Perhaps a good reread of the canon is in order. :)

'The Unforgettable Fire' (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/871577/1/The_Unforgettable_Fire) is a purely Silmarillion based story by Ithilwen of Himring. It tells the story two characters, both somewhat anti-heroes: a dark tempered and forbidding son of Feanor, Caranthir, and a human woman (a canon character), Haleth, who is left as the leader of her people in their dark times. The un-preceded and unexpected understanding between these two is referred to very briefly in canon, but never elaborated. Unfortunately though, the story has some slightly unnecessarily verbose sexual descriptions.. And yet, the terrifically humane characterization of this Wuthering Heights-esque tale makes this story indeed quite unforgettable.

'In Deep Places' (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1385363/1/In_the_Deep_Places) by Lamiel is a multi-chapter (gen-fic) story elaborating the Fellowship journey through Moria (as you might have guessed from the title) and beyond. Similar in style (and quality) as Thundera Tiger's story.

'Unravelling the Tale' (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/612788/1/Unravelling_the_Tale) by Nimue I Am. An excellent story with strong focus of Legolas and Gimli. The journey from Moria to Amon Hen.
'Legolas and Gimli... a friendship of this magnitude was not easily forged. The Ring will take Boromir, but what trials do the others face being near such evil?'

'Mortal Shores' (http://www.henneth-annun.net/stories/chapter.cfm?stid=259) by Vorondis has some small slash references, unfortunately - but ignoring those, it is quite an epic: a long and very well written 'adventure' story dealing with Second Age politics and those who get wrapped up in it. 'Gil-galad, Galadriel, the three Elven-Rings, and Glorfindel's return to Middle-earth.'

'Of Fire And Stars' (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1367103/1/Of_Fire_and_Stars) by gecco.
Pretty wonderfully epic adventure story that really has some great moments, some very dark moments, and some moments that I felt were a slightly too pointed. Nevertheless, it is an excellent take on the dwarvish point of view towards Middle-Earth, and the obcurity and the prejudice that plague dwarvish culture in the eyes of the other races in M-E starting from their gender roles to their very basic morality. Perhaps just a tiny bit AU take on what young Gimli had to through during the time his father was travelling to Erebor in The Hobbit.

Now, did I get carried away? ;) Hope you enjoy, at least I remember enjoying all of these.

I've yet to find any really good, meaty fanfic (though I've read some excellent ficlets and drabbles). Possibly I am unreasonable, given how much I love canon.

I have, at one point, read a little LotR fic, but have always refused to write it. Now, except for lightheared meta humor fics, I won't read any at all. It's just.... LotR's kinda sacred.

(Though you totally beat me at age-of-first-reading. I was eleven.)

I agree with you in most of your answers!

I think being like Merry is perfectly fine. Merry is cool! (Even though not as pretty as the White Lady of Rohan.)

I dislike Film!Arwen and Film!Elrond, too. My first impression of Elrond came fro The Hobbit, when I was about 13. I remember his description. "He was as noble and as fair in face as an elf-lord, as strong as a warrior, as wise as a wizard, as venerable as a king of dwarves, and as kind as summer."
Now Hugo Weaving did his best and film!Elrond is a noble, wise man, but he doesn`t have such kindness about him (as kind as summer...) and somehow book!Elrond`s backstory doesn`t fit with him. He was Earendil`s son!

And film!Arwen, who is (from the top of my head) some 3000 years old behaves like an adolescent, and a somewhat dim one.

Indeed, I agree. Hugo Weaving is such a wonderful actor (and in fact quite um, charming as Elrond).. But - the dialogue he was given did not exactly fit the character..

I especially dislike the angry comment about dwarves 'They hide in their mountains seeking riches. They care nothing for the troubles of others!' This hatred coming from the real bridge-builder between these races, the very person who, in 'the Hobbit', proved himself more understanding and appreciating of Dwarves than probably any other elf in Middle-Earth. It was so utterly fantastically miss-placed a line that it just makes me cringe every time. To say nothing of the 'Men are weak' -comment! Not book!Elrond that one, definitely not.

Also, I felt the objective of those lines could have been achieved by some other, more subtle methods that making Elrond represent ALL the pent up prejudice and bitterness of whole millenniums worth of racial conflicts of Middle-Earth.. All too bad, that.

We'll see how they can fare with the actual Hobbit film. I'm still rooting for Weaving to get re-casted, but hopefully with smarter lines this time.

As far as movie grievances go (in spite of all the beauty, of course) my biggest one is certainly the old comic-relief Movie!Gimli, that poor fella. Book!Gimli was one of my favourite characters.

Denethor is fantastic - his portrayal in the film (the script/directoral choices, not the acting, because goodness knows Noble looks terrific, and plays the part as presented well enough) infuriates me.

A wave from a fellow member of this miniscule fandom! Also a fan of Wieldy -- it's neat to see how his character has developed over the years.
(Have you seen [livejournal.com profile] kindkit's two stories (http://kindkit.livejournal.com/tag/fic:+dalziel+and+pascoe) about Wieldy? I recommend them highly...)

The fact that it doesn't really exist.

On the other hand, considering your answer to (14), this does spare you Helen/Peter, Helen/Harriet, Helen/Bunter*, Helen/Freddie, Helen/Dowager Duchess, Helen/Winifred...

*Actually, there is a teeny drabble out there on the subject.

It's only slightly Helen/Bunter, but nonetheless. It's here (http://copperbadge.livejournal.com/1330312.html?thread=28955528).

And let us not forget Helen/Mr Murbles, Helen/Sir Impey Biggs, Helen/Uncle Pail, Helen/Barbara (H. seduces B. to stop her marrying Peter), Helen/Dumbledore. That's the thing about imaginary crack/badfic - the list is endless.
