Date: 2008-03-05 11:40 pm (UTC)1. Strider, I think. I first read LotR when I was round about eight, so it's difficult to remember.
2. Probably Merry; not that I found him unsympathetic at first, but I thought that Merry and Pippin were interchangable, and they're not. Also, he's a comparative philologist, which impresses me more now than it did when I was eight.
3. Tricky, this one. I don't think I dislike any of the characters, in the sense of wishing that they weren't in the book. Film! Arwen annoys me intensely, though, as does Film! Elrond.
4. Um... Does Denethor count? He does some dreadful things, but he's got a sort of greatness none the less.
5. Dead heat between Aragorn and Faramir.
6. Faramir
7. Ted Sandyman. Closed mind, closed heart - and supercillious with it. And he's such a git in the first 'Prancing Pony' scene.
8. Sam. So much love....
9. Eowyn, Sam, Faramir, Aragon, Gandalf.
10. (if this means: wouldn't like them if I met them in real life) Shagrat, Wormtounge, Bill Ferny (the man, not the pony), Ted Sandyman, Sauron. [I don't think I would actually hate Saruman, Denethor, or even Lobelia].
11.I'd like to say Eowyn, but I think Merry might be nearer the mark.
12.Um... I'm not entirely sure what this means. I have a crack theory that Gimli is female, though (based on precisely nothing, I admit).
13. Faramir/ Eowyn (though see below). Sam/ Rosie (I wish Tolkien had flagged that up better, though I think Rosie is the 'something else' Sam doesn't explain in the temptation scene in Lorien)
14. When I first read LotR I completely failed to spot the Aragon/ Arwen stuff, and was enraged at Aragorn for not loving Eowyn back. Having finally understood what goes on between the characters, I now rather despise Aragorn/ Eowyn, because I think canon is more interesting.
Also, despite the best efforts of one of my flist, Orc/ anyone is rather squicky.
15. It's big and diverse.
Lots of very interesting people involved, some good meta.
Tauruithorn.
Filk.
Lots of things to interest linguists and language geeks like me.
16. It's very big and diverse - and sometimes rather scary.
People who haven't read the books.
I've yet to find any really good, meaty fanfic (though I've read some excellent ficlets and drabbles). Possibly I am unreasonable, given how much I love canon.
Wimpy, angsty Legolas fics.
Balrog wank.

Date: 2008-03-06 10:35 pm (UTC)Firstly, Thundera Tiger, a great LotR gen-fiction author. Wonderful balance between adventure plot, drama, humour and introspection. Fluent writing, well researched details, as well as very excellent characterization. I would virtually rec any of her stories, but if you've never ran into her writing 'While the Ring Went South' (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/439625/1/While_the_Ring_went_south) is a good place to start. A quite convincing 'missing scenes' story of certain part of the Fellowship's journey not actually described in the book in detail.
http://www.fanfiction.net/u/12399/
More gen-fic, author: Marnie. Especially insightful characterization of Celeborn, but very fluent characterization with others as well.
'Those Who Remain' (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1233093/1/Those_Who_Remain) where the authtor's summary is: 'What can Sam Gamgee, and Lord Celeborn of Lorien possibly have in common?'. A story that offers a little glimpse into the sorrow of both.
'Battle of the Golden Wood
' (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1261309/1/The_Battle_of_the_Golden_Wood) is a multi-chapter story about what went on it Lorien as the War of the Ring reached its borders.
'Just In Case' (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2162247/1/Just_In_Case), the summary of which is:
'Galadriel's temptation by the One Ring is well known, but what about Celeborn? What was he doing, while this perilous thing stayed in his realm?'
Zimraphel's story 'Not For Pride Alone' (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1640673/1/Not_For_Pride_Alone) is listed under Silmarillion, but it features mainly Glorfindel (and a few brave errant Hobbits) taking part in a stand against the Witch-King. Wonderful take on Glorfindel's characterization: the (allegedly) resurrected, humble but powerful Noldorin elf Lord making that fated prophesy. The same author also has other quite wonderful stories that focus of Glorfindel and his return to Middle-Earth.
'Sting' (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1233315/1/Sting) by TreeHugger. 'Bilbo learns of the origins of his little sword from Glorfindel.'
'Bargaining for Beginners' (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/663730/1/Bargaining_for_Beginners) by Honesty does have some insignificantly mild 'shipping', but it is still a wonderful take on the first meeting of two craftsmen during the time when there was existing trade relations between the elves of Ost-in-Edhil and dwarves of Moria in the Second Age. Its main characters are the makers of the West Gate of Moria mentioned in FotR: young Narvi and Celebrimbor, grandson of Feanor as their friendship begins to form. Legolas and Gimli were indeed not the first to have a deep friendship between their races. It's pretty lovely, I think.

Date: 2008-03-06 10:39 pm (UTC)'In Deep Places' (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1385363/1/In_the_Deep_Places) by Lamiel is a multi-chapter (gen-fic) story elaborating the Fellowship journey through Moria (as you might have guessed from the title) and beyond. Similar in style (and quality) as Thundera Tiger's story.
'Unravelling the Tale' (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/612788/1/Unravelling_the_Tale) by Nimue I Am. An excellent story with strong focus of Legolas and Gimli. The journey from Moria to Amon Hen.
'Legolas and Gimli... a friendship of this magnitude was not easily forged. The Ring will take Boromir, but what trials do the others face being near such evil?'
'Mortal Shores' (http://www.henneth-annun.net/stories/chapter.cfm?stid=259) by Vorondis has some small slash references, unfortunately - but ignoring those, it is quite an epic: a long and very well written 'adventure' story dealing with Second Age politics and those who get wrapped up in it. 'Gil-galad, Galadriel, the three Elven-Rings, and Glorfindel's return to Middle-earth.'
'Of Fire And Stars' (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1367103/1/Of_Fire_and_Stars) by gecco.
Pretty wonderfully epic adventure story that really has some great moments, some very dark moments, and some moments that I felt were a slightly too pointed. Nevertheless, it is an excellent take on the dwarvish point of view towards Middle-Earth, and the obcurity and the prejudice that plague dwarvish culture in the eyes of the other races in M-E starting from their gender roles to their very basic morality. Perhaps just a tiny bit AU take on what young Gimli had to through during the time his father was travelling to Erebor in The Hobbit.
Now, did I get carried away? ;) Hope you enjoy, at least I remember enjoying all of these.

(Though you totally beat me at age-of-first-reading. I was eleven.)
I agree with you in most of your answers!

Date: 2008-03-06 08:58 am (UTC)I think this is my problem, too. In a way I feel it's illogical, because I think Tolkien might have liked the idea of people writing fanfic (though not sexaully abused! Legolas/ orc MPREG, for instance)

Date: 2008-03-06 03:49 pm (UTC)I dislike Film!Arwen and Film!Elrond, too. My first impression of Elrond came fro The Hobbit, when I was about 13. I remember his description. "He was as noble and as fair in face as an elf-lord, as strong as a warrior, as wise as a wizard, as venerable as a king of dwarves, and as kind as summer."
Now Hugo Weaving did his best and film!Elrond is a noble, wise man, but he doesn`t have such kindness about him (as kind as summer...) and somehow book!Elrond`s backstory doesn`t fit with him. He was Earendil`s son!
And film!Arwen, who is (from the top of my head) some 3000 years old behaves like an adolescent, and a somewhat dim one.

Date: 2008-03-06 05:01 pm (UTC)And film!Arwen, who is (from the top of my head) some 3000 years old behaves like an adolescent, and a somewhat dim one.
My sentiments exactly. She wasn't exactly 'young, and yet no so.' Hugo Weaving is indeed a good actor, but over all film! Elrond comes over as being a bit grim (and I think this is a deliberate decision on the part of the film-makers), which is a great pity.
(no subject)
Date: 2008-03-06 11:49 pm (UTC)I especially dislike the angry comment about dwarves 'They hide in their mountains seeking riches. They care nothing for the troubles of others!' This hatred coming from the real bridge-builder between these races, the very person who, in 'the Hobbit', proved himself more understanding and appreciating of Dwarves than probably any other elf in Middle-Earth. It was so utterly fantastically miss-placed a line that it just makes me cringe every time. To say nothing of the 'Men are weak' -comment! Not book!Elrond that one, definitely not.
Also, I felt the objective of those lines could have been achieved by some other, more subtle methods that making Elrond represent ALL the pent up prejudice and bitterness of whole millenniums worth of racial conflicts of Middle-Earth.. All too bad, that.
We'll see how they can fare with the actual Hobbit film. I'm still rooting for Weaving to get re-casted, but hopefully with smarter lines this time.
As far as movie grievances go (in spite of all the beauty, of course) my biggest one is certainly the old comic-relief Movie!Gimli, that poor fella. Book!Gimli was one of my favourite characters.

Date: 2008-03-06 11:00 am (UTC)2. The character I never expected to love as much as I do now: Kirk, oddly. When I first saw the show I found him really dull. This was unfair.
3. The character everyone else loves that I don't: This is a bit of a cheat - I love Scotty's character, but James Doohan's accent drives me up the wall.
4. The character I love that everyone else hates: Um... I don't think I know enough about fandom opinions to answer this. I do like Chapel, despite her habit of moping over men who are completely wrong for her.
5. The character I would sleep with anytime: Despite the fact that Spock is the sexiest crew member by a country mile, I have a sneaking suspicion that he's probably rubbish in bed (the pathological repression is a bad sign... and I'm not going down the Pon Farr route for anything). So I will go for McCoy, who after all comes with high recommendations from Dax ;)
6. The character I'd want to be like: Sulu. He can fence, after all!
7. The character I'd slap: I can't remember his name, but the guy in 'Balance of Terror' who keeps making racist remarks about Spock.
8. Favorite character: Spock.
9. Five favorite characters: McCoy, Chekov, Sulu, Kirk, Scott (despite the accent, but then I came to Trek via the Blish novelisations...)
10. Five least favorite characters Rand, Kirk's psycho ex in "Turnabout Intruder" (though to be strictly accurate, it's more that I hate the total misogyny of the episode; I can forgive a lot of the crackiness of S3, but that one I'd cheerfully purge from existence), Zefram Cochran, collectively: the speciesist members of the away team in "The Gallileo 7", the two parti-coloured enemies in 'Let this be your last battlefield' (actually, I'd like to slap them, too).
11. Character I am most like: Oh God, it's probably Spock. Now I wish I hadn't been rude about him.
Although I do share quite a few of Kirk's interests (history, quoting random bits of Masefield, hill walking and camping, that is, rather than chasing skirts)
12. DEEP DARK SECRET REGARDING THIS FANDOM: I don't see Kirk/ Spock. Spock/ McCoy, on the other hand, might just work, though I'm not sure they could ever stop being snarky at each other long enough.
13. A pairing (or more!) I love: Kirk/ Enterprise. The ohly OTP in canon.
14. A pairing (or more!) I despise Kirk/ guest star of the week. Except in "The City on the Edge of Forever".
15. Five favorite things about the fandom: Not in it enough to comment - its passion, I suppose.
16. Five least favorite things about the fandom See above.

3. The character everyone else loves that I don't Lucius Malfoy. He's boring and vulgar, and incompetent to boot. (His one redeeming point is that he does genuinely seem to love his wife and son, which stops him being a cardboard cutout Useless Villain, but it still doesn't make me find him compelling)
4. The character I love that everyone else hates Slughorn. He's not sinister, and he's not hugely corrupt. He's just a somewhat self-indulgent Oxbridge don, who genuinely does mean well, when he's not playing with enemies out of his league.
5. The character I would sleep with anytime Kingsley Shacklebolt. I love Remus, too, but I don't think I could cope with his issues without ending up even more depressed than Tonks did. Epilogue! Harry is obviously impossible for reasons of morals and of self preservation: I bet Ginny knows some really interesting curses now.
6. The character I'd want to be like McGonnagal. When I grow up I want to be her.
7. The character I'd slap Malfoy, D.
8. Favorite character Harry himself.
9. Five favorite characters Hermione, McGonnagal, Lupin, Dumbledore, Snape.
10. Five least favorite characters Bellatrix, Michael Corner, Cormac McLaggan, Lavender Brown, Fenrir Greyback.
11. Character I am most like Hermione, with a touch of Lupin.
12. DEEP DARK SECRET REGARDING THIS FANDOM It scares me a lot of the time.
13. A pairing (or more!) I love Remus/ Tonks, screwed up as it was. (I'm having difficulty with these, as I'm not that big a shipper)
14. A pairing (or more!) I despise Dumbledore/ Harry (actually, any of the underage or incestuous ones, at least according to the definitions in the tables of kindred and affinity in the back of the BCP, but that one's particularly creepy)† In canon, Ron/ Lavender, but then that was the whole point....
15. Five favorite things about the fandom
There is some really fantastic fic out there.
I've met some great people through it.
The wide range of people involved in it.
There's some good fan art out there, too,
The Babb Chronicles
16. Five least favorite things about the fandom
The wank. Oh God, the wank.
Slytherfen. Bellatrix is not cool and sophisticated, she's a slightly more homicidal Unity Mitford.
Fics where the wizarding world is enormously pagan, whereas all the canon suggests that it's pretty similar to modern Britain, i.e. mostly agnostic with a Christian heritage.
Makeover! Hermione.
Meta involving huge amounts of alchemy. People complaining because JKR didn't follow said elaborate alchemy-based scheme.
† For instance, I don't ship Sirius/ Tonks, but I was genuinely baffled when the American side of fandom were squicked when Hermione thought Tonks was in love with him.

Date: 2008-03-06 08:39 pm (UTC)2. The character I never expected to love as much as I do now Jo Grant. Fandom talks about her as if she were a complete idiot, and she's actually rather good (ok, with the odd vague moment), and has a lovely relationship with the Doctor, and beats off the Master's hypnosis, and has a satisfying exit.
3. The character everyone else loves that I don't I'm tempted to say Rose, but I liked her in Season 1, so - actually, I've just remembered how incredibly annoying I find K9 most of the time, so I shall say him (despite the moving bit in 'School reunion')
4. The character I love that everyone else hates I wouldn't say I love Adric, but I hate him a lot less than most people seem to.
5. The character I would sleep with anytime The Brigadier. No question.
6. The character I'd want to be like Liz Shaw. Or maybe Two, who is my favourite Doctor.
7. The character I'd slap Ten, though not all the time.
8. Favorite character Well, the Doctor, even when he's being a git, as Ten frequently is at the moment. "Splendid chap, all of them!"
9. Five favorite characters Liz Shaw, the Brig, the Master, Martha, Harry.
10. Five least favorite characters Davros, except in Genesis, where he's brilliant in an evil way; K9; New Series Cybermen; the Absorbaloff; bloody Cassandra.
11. Character I am most like. Probably Zoe, though I wouldn't mind being Liz Shaw once I've grown up/ got a few more letters after my name ;)
12. DEEP DARK SECRET REGARDING THIS FANDOM I have yet to see an episode of Six, and I am too scared of his clothes to try.
13. A pairing (or more!) I love Brig/ Liz.
14. A pairing (or more!) I despise Doctor/ Doctor. There's no need to make him more in love with himself than canon suggests most of him is already!
15. Five favorite things about the fandom It's saner than HP fandom.
(See comments for HP)
16. Five least favorite things about the fandom Saner than HP is not all that sane.
Militant batchippers (as opposed to the majority of doctor/ Rose fen)/ Martha-bashers
Shipwars
Arguments about what's canon make my head hurt
RTD's attitude to women and race; people who react badly to any dissent about New Who's brilliance (though really, there's a lot about it that I love).

Date: 2008-03-07 09:23 am (UTC)2. The character I never expected to love as much as I do now Watson. He's more interesting than he thinks he is, and a much better person than Holmes, though he can't see it.
3. The character everyone else loves that I don't Um... pass?
4. The character I love that everyone else hates Is there a universally hated figure in Holmes? I rather liked Irene Adler.
5. The character I would sleep with anytime Watson. He's a sweet and apparently fairly dashing chap, and I want to know how much the 'experience of women ranging over three separate continents' is worth.
6. The character I'd want to be like Um, Watson, only slightly quicker on the uptake at times.
7. The character I'd slap Lestrade, but only when he's being REALLY stupid.
8. Favorite character Holmes, in the sense that he makes the stories, but I'd like Watson a lot better in real life.
9. Five favorite characters Holmes, Watson, Mary Morstan, Irene Adler, Mycroft Holmes.
10. Five least favorite characters Pass
11. Character I am most like Um, no idea. We don't see enough of them. I'm certainly not a Holmes!
12. DEEP DARK SECRET REGARDING THIS FANDOM Ever since I read a German pastiche with Holmes and Watson in Cologne, looking for the relics of the Three Kings, and meeting Henry Jones Sr, I have been convinced that this is canon. So is 'The Seven Per Cent Solution'....
13. A pairing (or more!) I love I honestly have never thought about Sherlock Holmes in shipping terms.
14. A pairing (or more!) I despise I don't think Holmes/ anyone works, and that includes Holmes/ Watson and Holmes/ Adler, which are the only possibilities I can even conceive of. (Holmes may or may not be gay, but I'm certain that he ignores sex, or at least relationships, as a distraction and a waste of time).
15. Five favorite things about the fandom How can you not love a fandom which incuded Sayers and Mgr Knox, among a host of other extremely talented people?
Some really high quality fanfic, and it's publishable to boot.
Sherlock Holmes fandom invented fandom as we know it, or at least as I'm interested in it (since we have to give Trek the credit for the obsession with ship fics of all flavours)
The sheer dedication and seriousness of Sherlockians, which I cannot match but appreciate.
The BBC radio plays (the Clive Merrison/ Michael Williams ones. Those two are Holmes and Watson to me, and I hear them when I read the stories).
16. Five least favorite things about the fandom
It seems curiously absent from the internet.
I've missed the really interesting early part!
Dreadful film adaptations
People making Watson out to be a fat, bumbling idiot. (Watson is neither fat not stupid)
Those Mary Russell spin-off books. Blatant Mary-Sue, and not well written (though I quite liked her Sabine Baring-Gould, but he's a gift to a writer).

Date: 2008-03-08 03:45 pm (UTC)2. The character I never expected to love as much as I do now Wieldy. He started off so unnoticable, and got so interesting. Though I think it was his Rider Haggard obsession that clinched it.
3. The character everyone else loves that I don't Pass. I hate TV! Ellie, but she's clearly a pod person, or something of that ilk.
4. The character I love that everyone else hates Er, pass again: I don't know who thinks what about whom.
5. The character I would sleep with anytime 'Hat' Bowler, probably. Or Peter before he married Ellie.
6. The character I'd want to be like Ellie. I wish I had Fat Andy's l33t country dancing skills, though.
7. The character I'd slap Lilliewhite(?) the Vicar in "Pictures of Perfection", while he's still mooning over Caddy and being a general obtuse idiot.
8. Favorite character Wieldy
9. Five favorite characters Dalziel, Ellie, Peter, Digweed, Rosie
10. Five least favorite characters Franny Roote, that bloke Ellie nearly had the affair with,... that's about it.
11. Character I am most like Probably the vicar from "Pictures of Perfection", despite the fact that I'm not sure I've got the poor bloke's name right...
12. DEEP DARK SECRET REGARDING THIS FANDOM I loathe the TV adaptations, despite the perfect casting of Warren Clarke as Dalziel, but that's hardly a secret!
13. A pairing (or more!) I love Peter/ Ellie; Wieldy/ Digweed
14. A pairing (or more!) I despise Dalziel/ Pascoe gets the OMGWTFBBQ reaction from me. Why would you want to write out Ellie or Cap Marvell? (mind you, I could ask the BBC scriptwriters the same thing)
15. Five favorite things about the fandom The books themselves - the complexity, the irony, the prose, the characterisation, the literary in-jokes.
16. Five least favorite things about the fandom Those bloody TV adaptations and their character rape.

4. 5. The character I would sleep with anytime Picard. Boring or what?.
6. The character I'd want to be like Dr Pulaski. I always vastly preferred her to Crusher.
7. The character I'd slap I'm afraid Troi got on my nerves an awful lot of the time, though slapping her seems a bit harsh...
8. Favorite character Worf
9. Five favorite characters Picard, when he's not being pompous; O'Brian; Reg Barclay; Dr Pulaski; Riker (even if he's a bit boring at times)
10. Five least favorite characters Troi, LaForge (Boring!), Crusher I suppose
11. Character I am most like I have an unpleasant feeling it's Reg Barclay
12. DEEP DARK SECRET REGARDING THIS FANDOM The Smug Atheism of the show irritates me at times (such as the time Picard gets mistaken for a God, and they solve the problem by having him shot - and then healing him. I'm not much of an anthropologist, but I'd have thought what that would actually do is create a dying-and-rising god cult...)
13. A pairing (or more!) I love Actually, I can't think of one, but I was more convinced by Riker/ Troi than Worf/ Troi...

5. The character I would sleep with anytime Peter. Duh.
6. The character I'd want to be like The Dean. I want to be her when I grow up!
7. The character I'd slap Helen. Ghastly woman.
8. Favorite character Dead heat between Peter and Harriet. Though my favourite minor character is the Dowager Duchess.
9. Five favorite characters The Dowager Duchess, Bunter, Miss Climpson, the Dean, Miss Meteyard...
10. Five least favorite characters Can only be answered in the form of 'wouldn't like to meet in real life', with the exception of Montegue Egg, who bores me. Helen, Miss Hillyard (though I feel sorry for the woman), Miss Schuster-Slatt, Vernon Dean (no, we never actually meet him, but it's abundantly clear why his murder was a service to humanity!).
11. Character I am most like Miss Lydgate, I suspect, with perhaps a touch of Harriet.
12. DEEP DARK SECRET REGARDING THIS FANDOM I don't think I've got one, I'm afraid.
13. A pairing (or more!) I love Peter/ Harriet. Which is predictable, but I don't care.
14. A pairing (or more!) I despise I refuse to contemplate Helen/ anyone, on grounds of taste and decency.
15. Five favorite things about the fandom There is some very good crack out there, which is unusual, as most crack-fics are pretty dire.
Indeed, though there is very little fic about, I think the average quality is far higher than for any other fandom I know.
It seems to attract intelligent and interesting people.
It provides an excuse for stuffing your fics full of literary references and random quotations - it's not being pretentious, it's reflecting your source!
Produced the only psychologically plausible MPREG fic I have ever encountered ;) (though admittedly I avoid the genre like the plague generally!)
16. Five least favorite things about the fandom The fact that it doesn't really exist.

*Actually, there is a teeny drabble out there on the subject.
