This is a long shot, but do any of the Germans on the f-list have any experience of using the O2 'at home' flat rate internet service? It looks like I might end up in a flat minus a telephone connection, but I'm very reluctant to be without the internet.

Personally, I don't know anything about it, but my friend ayumie used to have a student job at O2 and subscribes to their Internet service as well, if I'm not mistaken. Maybe I could ask her for you.

Hi! Like aervir said, I used to work at
o2. Their internet service itself isn't too bad. Up to
now I didn't have any trouble with the internet - it's
easy to install and the billing has always been
correct.

The phone connection is pretty crappy, though. Loads
of static, sometimes beeps and occasionally you are
disconnected. And the modem is huge and sports really
bright blue lights. I live in a one room appartment,
so I have to switch it out at night.

If you're just going to use the internet, it's a good
offer. 30€ euro for o2 DSL M gives you a surf flatrate, a
telephone connection and DSL 4000. 5 euro more €buy you an
additional phone flatrate. I'd recommend ordering via
their website, since it's cheaper than in a shop:

Where in Germany are you going to live? I've heard
that there are sometimes problems with o2 in the
countryside. If you're staying in a bigger city
though, you should be alright.

It's hard to tell what's a good offer for an internet
flatrate these days. Prices are dropping so fast, you
can get a new and better offer almost every week. It'd
definitely be a good idea to check out other offers.
But o2 prices went down maybe a month ago, so right
now they are among the cheapest, I think.

Oh, I just checked: I think you have to order the o2
DSL offers for at last 24 months. Are you going to
stay in Germany this long? If not, you might have to
go to a shop after all and ask if there's any way
around those terms.

Hi - and thanks for the advice. I'm going to be living in town.

I was thinking of the offers where you can surf from your computer via your mobile phone- I'm a bit concerned about having to fix the amount of data they allow you (as I can never work out how much I generally use, and whether 1000 is likely to be enough!):

I don't know about O2 but 1&1 has got good offers as well. As far as I know, they offer DSL flat rate without the necessity of having a telephone line with German Telekom.

Personally I use GMX, though an older contract, and I don't know if the offer I took is still available (DSL flat rate at 20€/month).
It's quite possible there is an even better offer out there at the moment. ;)

Thanks for the tips. Part of the issue is the contract: I need one that doesn't require a 24-month committment. But I'll certainly look at the ones you mention.
