Slacktivist has a post on ten filmic and televisual moments that get you every time.

I'm not sure I actually have ten, but ... though I wouldn't say they always make me cry; they have done so, though.

1. "I have been, and always will be, your friend. Live long and prosper." Spock's death scene never fails to make me well up. So does the final shot of the coffin, and Nimoy doing the "Space, the final frontier" monologue.

2. Theoden puts his armour on, while reciting "Where is the horse and the rider". I have lots of issues with the LotR films, but that was just magical - beautiful and sad (Old English poetry FTW!)... actually, there are an awful lot of moments with the Rohirrim, who were the best thing about the films, that fall into the lump-in-the-throat category.

3. Midge the otter is killed in Ring of Bright Water. I haven't seen this since I was seven, and am still slightly traumatised.

4. The end of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Specifically, the bit where Indy heals his dad using the Grail (and Marcus crosses himself, which I always thought was a nice touch on the part of the actor), and, a bit later, Henry Jones Sr's "Indiana... let it go", followed by the exchange "What did you find?" "Enlightenment." The key question about the Grail, in the French version of the legend was "For what does it serve?", as Henry would know (and as Elsa didn't; though she obviously hadn't read Parzival very attentively, either)

5. "We'll always have Paris. We didn't have, we lost it until you came to Casablanca. We got it back last night." (Though Rick is wrong: they only really got it back when they were both willing to sacrifice their love for the greater good... but then, I actually think that Laszlo is the man Ilse really loves; Rick symbolises escape, and freedom, but in the end she will only be satisfied if she goes on fighting the good fight with Laszlo, as Rick is only satisfied by giving up the pretence that he doesn't give a damn about what happens to the world).... and yes, I'm generally a little misty eyed at Renault's change of heart, and "This could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship". And the anthem scene. And... er, large chunks of the film, actually.

6. "Come on. Give me this. Just this one day [...] Everybody lives, Rose! Just this once, everybody lives!" Especially when Doctor Constantine recovers. The end of The Doctor Dances is the most eucatastrophic Doctor Who's ever been, and it's fantastic! And it's so perfect that a disaster which has been precipitated by a con-trick fatally combined with partial information and fuelled by the keeping of secrets is redeemed by a loving, if terrified, acknowledgment and acceptance of the truth.

The fact that Chris Eccleston looks absolutely incandescent with joy doesn't hurt it, either.

7. The Doctor drives away from the party at the end of The Green Death. ... I must admit that I found this much more affecting than That Beach Scene.

8. Faramir rides out, as Billy Boyd sings. Despite Denethor's noisy eating, which almost but not quite ruins the moment (wtf was Jackson thinking?). Every time this comes round on the soundtrack, I have to stop and listen.

... I think that might be it. Have heart of stone, clearly. Though probably I will remember more as soon as I post (there are also, oddly enough, substantially more moments in literature, but that's a list for another day).

Anyway, dear readers, what are yours?
