Ack: while checking what the weekly allowance for asylum seekers is, I found this article from a local paper reporting the C of E diocese of Manchester's Lent initiative (challenging teachers in church schools to live on said allowance for a week: £15 to raise money for a fund for asylum seekers). It's a nice article, even if I suspect it was largely written by the diocesan press officer - but the comments (bar one) tend to confirm your theory. Unfortunately...
