Yuletide Letter.
Nov. 20th, 2011 03:19 pmDear mystery author!
Firstly, thank you for signing up. I can't wait to see what you'll write me (we have at least one of these fandoms in common, so the chances I'll love it are already very good).
Secondly, some general notes about the sort of fics I prefer. I generally like to read fic that explores some aspect of character, or the relationship (not just in the shippy sense) between characters. I love fics that explore what drives a character, looks at their values and obsessions, or examines why they've made the choices they did. I tend to be a canon shipper. I also quite like fics which explore what might have happened if someone had made one different decision, or if things had gone a different way. I'm not keen on the different setting AU (such as high school AUs), though. If you feel it would help, my profile at AO3 will show you the kinds of fic I write/ bookmark.
I'm also not particularly interested in porn, but that doesn't mean I'd be unhappy with a fic that touched on relationships or even included a bit of fade-to-black sex. Slash or het relationships are both fine (but, as I say, I tend to be a canon-shipper.
On the fandoms I've requested.
Rev. Almost anything for this fandom would make me gleeful, as there is no fic out there that I've found! I'd be really happy with something slice-of-lifey (whatever the equivalent of case fic for non-mystery based fandoms). This is the one fandom I've requested that doesn't have a closed canon, but please don't worry about being jossed.
If you want something more specific, though: one of my favourite things about Rev. is Adam and Alex's relationship, and the way you can both see the strain Adam's job puts it under, but also how committed they are to each other. And I love the fact that they both have a slightly (or, in Adam's case, very) goofy side. We usually see things from Adam's point of view, so it would be fantastic to see something from Alex's. She's very much on the edge of her husband's world, and has her own life we don't see anything of.
But I also really, really love the Archdeacon - so sinister, so apparently heartless, and yet every now again we get a suggestion that there's more to him than that. Word of God has it that he is not only gay but has a partner who we'll meet this series, so it might be interesting to do something with that.
I also like the way the show takes Adam's faith seriously, without turning him into a plaster saint or pretending that the church is perfect.
Swallows and Amazons. People tend to write stories about what happens when the children grow up, and they're great (and I'd be very happy with one of those) but I'd be just as happy with a story about them as children. I'm particularly fond of the few times we see Titty and Nancy interacting, and of course the dynamic between John and Nancy us a fun one to explore.
Lord Peter Wimsey. I'm particularly fond of Miss Climpson and the glimpses we get of the Cattery; something involving her working with Peter would be great. I also love Charles Parker and his reactions to Peter's world. Or something about Harriet either pre-Peter or early on in their acquaintance would be love. Gaudy Night has left me very intrigued by Harriet's undergraduate days.
But don't feel bound by any of these suggestions - whatever you write, I will be thrilled to receive fic from a fandom I love. (I also notice I've written masses more on 'Rev.' than anything else. Please don't be discouraged if you aren't a match for this fandom - the fact I've written more on it doesn't mean that I will be disappointed if you write me something from the other two fabulous fandoms. But as the new series has just started, I have lots of prompts buzzing about in my head.)
