The current situation in the Anglican Communion is too depressing for words, which is why I generally don't mention it on here (well, that and I want people to keep reading...) However, I was made exceedingly cross by a positively boot-licking interview of Peter Akinola (the gay-hating Archbishop of Nigeria, and, for what it's worth, flagrant destroyer of discipline in the Episcopalian Church in the US) by Ruth Gledhill in the Times:

It was no surprise that his views on homosexuality and western decadence anoyed me, though I was more bemused than irked by his apparent belief that the answer to the evangelical problems of the church was more bishops (some of us would say that's the last thing we need...), but I was really infuriated by Ruth Gledhill's uncritical portrait of a humble man who has never sought power and was happy to go back to being a simple parish priest.† This is interesting, because on an Anglican blog elsewhere I found a story about Akinola's determined but fruitless attempts to hang on to power in the Christian Association of Nigeria:

Honestly, Gledhill, do your research next time!
(It would also be nice if we could dispose of the easy equation between Africa and a hardline conservative stance which can't remain in communion with the decadent gay-loving west. Does Desmond Tutu look like a white European to you?)
