Nov. 6th, 2007 05:25 pmI know I'm spamming a bit today (bad tree_and_leaf! No biscuit!), but I am blaming it on an annoying day where the heating engineers didn't come at all. Those who thought I was being silly complaining about the plumbers turning up early may laugh at this point...
Anyway, I wanted to share this link to a rather cruel Peter Bradshaw article about the proposed Star Wars TV spinoff. I'm not a big Bradshaw fan, although his choler can be amusing - but he's too much of a snob for my taste. However, this is worth wading through the opening and rather tedious riff about left-over merchandising to his four episode summaries - which are parodies of famous moments in British TV. it took me absolutely ages to get number two, but I did in the end, and then kicked myself for my obtuseness, as there are two fairly obvious clues. I think one is the funniest, but that's simply because the episode that's being parodied is exquisitely funny anyway, although I think it lends itself more to a Potterverse parody, probably with Harry and Ron in the (X and Y) roles.† See how you do, if you've nothing better to do.
† Actually, there's potential for an AU Potterverse version of the show in question, only I think it would have to have Harry, against type a bit, in the ne'er do well role, because otherwise it would probably have to be Harmonian, albeit with a somewhat unsympathetically re-written Hermione. Points to anyone who can follow what the hell I'm talking about.

Date: 2007-11-06 04:37 pm (UTC)TL: DR?
Date: 2007-11-06 05:05 pm (UTC)The television programme which Bradshaw is parodying is that episode of 'Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads" where Bob and Terry desperately try to avoid finding out the score in the match before it's braodcast on "Match of the Day", and their friends keep trying to tell them. I think the parody would work better with Harry and Ron, only if you wanted to retell the Likely Lads in a wizarding world context (I'm not entirely sure of the point of it, but I've seen fics with less of one), you would hit the problem that Harry and Ron are, canonically, happily married, and while one would probably tend to make Harry Bob and Ron Terry, Ginny isn't anything like Thelma and Hermione exists.
"Harmonian" is a derogatory term for militant Harry/ Hermione shippers, who generally fervently disliked Ron and made him out to be an idiot. Hermione is more like Thelma than Ginny is (though the resemblance is not strong), so if you wanted Harry= Bob, you could then have Hermione= Thelma. However, in contrast to Harmonian fics, which usually end up trashing Ron's character, this would have to make Hermione into a less likable character.

Date: 2007-11-06 05:24 pm (UTC)Hence "I ship Harry/ Ginny"; "I'm a Harry/ Hermione shipper". It usually implies a fairly substantial emotional commitment to the relationship, and may percieve it as their OTP (One True Pairing), which is why there was a group of Harry Potter fans who were very annoyed that Harry ended up with Ginny instead of Harry, and who complained, in defiance of the evidence, that Rowling had changed her mind and that Harry/ Hermione was obviously the 'real' relationship. Hence the term 'bat shippers', as in 'bat shit insane' for people who are unhealthily invested in one 'ship', and go around slagging off other possible pairings.†
† In Doctor Who fanfiction, there is a vocal contingent of new series fans who believe that Rose is the Doctor's One ~True Love and that no other companion is, was or will be worthy of him. Unkind people refer to them as 'Bat chippers', after the Doctor/ Rose lj community 'Time and Chips'.
I think I need a drink, and so I expect do you.

Date: 2007-11-06 05:27 pm (UTC)Always refered to as a highlight of British TV, but I must confess I've never seen it. It was rather before my time....

Date: 2007-11-06 07:03 pm (UTC)Someone definitely ought to write Harry and Ron trying to avoid hearing the Quidditch score from WWN or anywhere else though. Only problem is that Quidditch matches can't end 0-0 (oops!).
