Name one character from any fandom I know and I will give you three facts about them from my personal canon.
Fandoms: Harry Potter, Doctor Who (though I reserve the right to do someone else here; I don't know canon well enough for Doctors 5-8 to be confident of being able to do their companions): I'd also be keen to have a crack at: Star Treks TOS and DS9, Dalziel and Pascoe (book canon only, obviously), Life on Mars, Patrick O'Brian, Swallows and Amazons, Narnia, and John Buchan's Richard Hannay-verse.
ETA: and the Wimsey-verse, of course!

2 John would never have got into the Navy as an officer if it had't been for her ruthless coaching in maths.
3 She was briefly in SOE during the war, and did a fine job, but an injury put paid to that. She's not sure whether she is ashamed of the part of her that was disappointed, or the part that was relieved. She ended up working at Bletchley, thanks to one of her old tutors, who had noticed her affinity for codes and puzzles when he found her devising a new signalling scheme for the use of the first boat...

I don't see Nancy as an intellectual as such, but I think she'd be keen to do something that would take her to a new place (whereas Peggy would probably stay at home). If she ran across an inspiring teacher, I think she might well have landed up at university, although I certainly can't see her becoming a don. Her interest in codes is of course canonical.
I think she's clearly brighter than John, at least in an academic sense.
