Have found wonderfully barbed quotation attributed to the late Herbert McCabe OP, priest, theologian and philosopher:

"There is a depressing tendency on the part of both conservative and liberal Christians to assume that discussions of Christian morality are going to be mostly about sex. Sex is obviously a profoundly important mode of human communication, but to treat of it in isolation from the other social, political, and economic relationships between people is asking for trouble -asking for intellectual trouble I mean; in the practical field it is asking for a quiet life. So long as Christian morality is thought to be mainly about whether and when people should go to bed, no bishops are going to be crucified. And this, as I say, is depressing."

Barbed - but very apposite.

I can't remember much of what I did read (which suggests I need a re-read) but I definitely remember being quite impressed.

No, but if they're true, then lucky Wales. I met JJ once (and heard him preach) and was very impressed.

I know, lucky Wales. I was unfortunate enough to be at one of the churches that blocked his appointment to Reading (though I was in the process of leaving, sort of), which was a thoroughly shameful episode. JJ spoke at Worcester once, and was extremely impressive and gave off an almost palpable sense of kindness. His partner seemed very nice as well.

Isn't there a quote attributed to D. L. Sayers along the lines of "there actually six more deadly sins other than lust"?

And I hope you'll forgive me for posting the following link, but I found it on my f-list this morning and immediately thought of the quote above.

O.o. It's a fine run thing, but I think the comment about stoning adulterers indicates a spoof. There are some very odd things meant seriously on the internet, though, so it's hard to say....

The Sayers quotation sounds more or less right: it's certainly very much in the spirit of her remarks in her translation of Inferno.

She actually wrote a whole article: "The Other Six Deadly Sins", which is printed in (I think) Unpopular Opinions. Though she also discussed (and ranted about) the theme elsewhere.

That article should also have a warning not to drink tea whilst reading as it is a real nuisance cleaning it off the monitor.
