Happy Birthday
scionofgrace - who informs me that today is (or was, rather, because today for liturgical purposes started at 6pm yesterday) Birkat Hachama, when the sun returns to the position (er, from an earth-relative point of view!) in which, according to Rabbinic tradition, it was at creation - a cycle of 28 years.
There are a number of readings appropriate to this, and also a blessing: "Blessed are you, Lord our God, King of the Universe, who effect the work of creation," to be said when you see the sun rise.
This year, for the first time since 1925, it also falls on 14 Nissan, the Eve of Passover; tradition holds that this is a time proper for redemptive acts, and that the first Passover and the first Purim fell at such times.
I wish I'd known this yesterday. I'd have got up for that!

Thank you to everyone who sent me Christmas cards, by the way - they are all lovely (and I have an excuse to keep the ones I didn't get till today up till Candlemas, which is cheerful).
Particular thanks to
carlanime for the most unusual Christmas card I have ever received, and
juno_magic for the fabulous pictures. In a strange way (given that they're in a different medium) they rather remind me of Arthur Rackham.
Particular thanks to

Happy Birthday to
dr_biscuit. Hope you have a good day, and thank you so much for introducing me to Leonard Cohen; even after a short acquaintance, some of his songs have become really, really important to me. (You'll be amused to hear that I have also made a Cohen convert via the unlikely medium of a sermon...)

A meme, gacked from a_t_rain
I did the first lines meme: Post the first line from your 25 most recent fanfics and try to find a pattern.
I think I'll leave the pattern finding to you, though I note I do like first lines that suggest there's some quirk which the central character is hiding from others…
( Handily, I have posted precisely 25 fics. )
